Into the Wild

Just finished watching the 2007 movie Into the Wild ...

... great story, beautiful story, real story, inspiring story. I was really moved. Highly recommend it!

Eddie Vedder (the vocalist from one of my favorite bands - Pearl Jam) wrote the soundtrack for this movie and it is the perfect accompaniment.

10 things that make me smile Sunday

* houji cha - roasted green tea (Yoshi`s mum gave me a huge bag of it since it was the anniversary of her mother`s passing and she loved houji cha)
* the 100yen shop (got 2 tea cups, a tea strainer, a tray, an oven mitt, cinnamon and some onigiri boxes for 700yen!)
* Zara (got the cutest top there today!!)
* Loft (bought a super cute bento box and slippers for Eve)
* free Ipod touch games/applications (so addictive and such great time-wasters on the train)
* Lady Gaga. Just missed out on getting tickets to her Osaka concert, but enjoying blasting her latest songs as I clean up my apartment.

* only 2 more sleeps till Eve arrives!
* hearing (through the grape-vine) that the owner of the kindergarten where I work said that she wishes I wasn`t leaving... (she is a VERY hard woman to please, so this made me super smiley!)
* being given a web-cam guided tour of my Dad`s house in England. Such amazing views!
* cute seasonal items (pink candy, pink popcorn, little dolls everywhere) for the Hina Matsur…

Busy week

So last week I was busy working and getting everything ready for my little sister (Eve) who is arriving in Japan on Tuesday night!

She is coming for a 6-month working holiday and will be staying with me (as long as we don`t kill each other!!). We haven`t lived together since we were young teenagers, so it is gonna be really different, but hopefully really fun!

The other thing is that I have been living alone for the last 3-4 years, so it is going to be interesting having someone to share my space. I think it will be good practice for my upcoming married life!

Yoshi`s mum has been helping out A LOT. She gave me lots of bedding (sheets, pillowcases, a blanket) and a single bed from their house! I have converted my TV room (4 tatami mats - very small) into Eve`s bedroom and packed it full of things that I hope that she will love.

School has been busy too as we are wrapping things up for the end of the school year (school in Japan runs from April to March - quite different to New Zealand) and…

I am feeling better :)

Hi all,

Sorry I didn`t do a `10 things that make me smile Sunday` post yesterday. To be honest, I wasn`t feeling all that smiley, after a 3-week bout of nausea culminating in a horror night of vomiting, followed by 3 days of no appetite and the complete inability to sleep.

The cause? `maybe it is a stomach cold? or maybe it is the Noro virus?` (the doctor suggested, after waiting at the hospital for 2 and 1/2 hours).

Anyway, I am on the mend, helped tremendously by my new discovery; porridge.

Of course, it isn`t really new, by anyone`s standards, even my own, as it got me through almost 2 decades of winters before I left New Zealand.

In Japan however, for some unknown reason, yesterday (Valentine`s Day) was the first time I ever thought to make porridge in Japan! And it worked wonders. All soft and warm and sweet and nourishing. Tasted just like home.

Yesterday I ate porridge with a tiny sprinkling of brown sugar and cold fresh milk.I don`t really like milk but had some in the fridge after m…

Smart sexy funny

Have you seen this show?

The Secret Diary of a Call Girl

It is a British television show starring the gorgeous Billie Piper (who you probably know from her pop-star/singing days); and is based on the blogs and book by the pseudonym `Belle de jour`.

It is very smart, witty, funny, clever, sexy and full of fabulous British English (the greatest line from the last episode I saw - `You are properly mental, you are`).

Here is a bit of the show (maybe the trailer?) from youtube...

If you want to see it (and don`t live in the UK), I watch from Japan on

Here are some links to the first 4 episodes of season 3 on zshare video.

10 things that make me smile Sunday

There is always someone to ruin a photo...

* my dad for sending me this pic to make me smile
* riding the train out to Kyoto in the blistering cold and watching snow fall all around
* eating homemade chocolate cake, pudding and Mozart Cafe`s rare cheesecake (and drinking 3 coffees) all in one day
* catching up with an old friend and meeting her 20month old daughter
* eating pizza for lunch with Teru-chan and Sabu-kun and sitting under their kotatsu
* buying 2 bowls, 2 sheets, a duvet cover and a towel from Ikea for my sister`s imminent arrival for less than $30
* getting all the washing dry outside despite the freezing temperatures
* making puffed rice with the kindergarteners last week (noisy but delicious)
* only 24 days left with said kindergarteners!!
* looking forward to more excitement in 2010

Who do you love?

One person whose blog I can never pass up reading, is Gala Darling. She is from New Zealand but now lives in New York City, and her blog posts are something that dreams are made of. She gives advice on everything from clothes, and SHOES! to love and sex and the pictures embedded between her words of wisdom are to die for.

This week her blog post is all about self-love ♥ (very appropriate in this here month of lurrrve) and it encourages people to love themselves before trying to find others to love them (although something I find extremely hard to do, this is a topic close to my heart).

She includes a gorgeous quote...

“You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love & affection than you are yourself, & that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love & affection.”(Buddha)

and heaps more. Check it out please -->
